Tired of carrying a delicate paper vehicle registration booklet? Read our 2026 guide to upgrading to a durable, microchipped plastic smart card RC.
Under recent MoRTH updates, all RTOs across India issue a standardized **Unified Smart Card (USC)**. This design features a consistent purple color scheme, a standard layout containing emergency contact numbers, fuel emissions details, and a high security microchip that is universally crawlable by traffic police scanners nationwide.
Converting your hand-written paper booklets to the official plastic smart card is more than an aesthetic upgrade—it provides high security protection against identity theft and vehicle cloning. The microchip stores details that are cryptographically signed by the local transport commissioner.
An ISO-compliant integrated chip storing complete registration records, engine/chassis number strings, and pending fine histories readable by traffic department terminal devices.
Uses specialized laser typography that cannot be scraped, chemical-wiped, or reproduced, keeping owner signatures and registration stamps highly secure.
Log into the online Vahan vehicle services screen, select "Issue Smart Card RC", enter your registration and chassis details, and complete the ₹200 upgrade fee payment.
Visit your registering local RTO, submit your physical paper booklet along with the printed online payment receipt and insurance credentials to the smart card counter officer.
The RTO technical officer checks Vahan database logs. Once verified, the PVC smart card is laser-engraved, microchip programmed, and dispatched directly to your address via speed post.
While the Vahan portal supports faceless services, certain steps may still require a physical visit to your local RTO for inspection or document submission.
Find your RTO Code & Office Details ➔An RTO RC Smart Card is a durable, plastic credit card-sized document containing a 64KB microchip. It stores your vehicle's critical data securely (registration mark, engine/chassis number, tax status, fuel type) according to MoRTH guidelines.
Old paper registration booklets are highly susceptible to weather damage, tearing, and forgery. Plastic Smart Cards are laser-engraved, tamper-proof, contain an embedded microchip, and are easily readable by RTO handheld scanners across India.
The standard fee to convert or upgrade an old paper booklet to a Smart Card RC is usually ₹200 for smart card personalization, plus a nominal ₹50-100 handling fee depending on your specific state RTO.
Once approved, your registering RTO dispatches the plastic smart card via speed post. You can copy the Speed Post Tracking Number from the Vahan database under "Know Your Application Status" and track it on the India Post website.
