Driving Licence Services in India

Apply, renew, track status, and download your Driving Licence — all explained step by step on the Parivahan Sewa portal.

Learner's Licence (LL)

Your first step to getting a permanent driving licence. Valid for 6 months.

Eligibility

  • 🛵16 years — Motorcycles without gears (up to 50cc), with parental consent
  • 🚗18 years — Geared motorcycles, cars, Light Motor Vehicles (LMV)
  • 🚛20 years — Commercial transport vehicles
  • 📚Must pass knowledge test on latest traffic rules & road signs (2026)

Documents Required

  • Age Proof — Aadhaar, Birth Certificate, 10th Marksheet, Passport
  • Address Proof — Aadhaar, Utility Bill (within 3 months), Passport
  • Identity Proof — Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport
  • Form 1 — Self-declaration of physical fitness
  • Form 2 — Application for Learner's Licence
  • Passport-size photographs (recent)
  • Application fee receipt

How to Apply for Learner's Licence

Visit Sarathi Portal

Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your State.

Select LL Service

Click "Learner's Licence" → "Apply for LL."

Fill Application

Complete Form 2 with your personal details, upload documents.

Take Online Test

Attempt the online traffic rules & road signs knowledge test.

Pay Fee

Pay the applicable LL fee online (UPI, Net Banking, Debit Card).

Download LL

After approval, download your Learner's Licence from the portal.

Permanent Driving Licence (DL)

Requires a valid Learner's Licence held for minimum 30 days.

ℹ️ You can apply for a Permanent DL only after holding your LL for at least 30 days and at most 180 days.

Visit Sarathi Portal

Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your state.

Apply for DL

Click "Apply for Driving Licence" and enter your LL number.

Upload Documents

Upload Form 1A (if applicable), address proof, age proof, LL copy.

Book Driving Test Slot

Schedule your driving test appointment at your local RTO.

Appear for Test

Visit the RTO on the scheduled date with original documents.

Receive DL

After passing the test, your DL will be dispatched by post to your registered address.

DL Renewal

You can renew your licence up to 1 month before expiry. Late renewal attracts a ₹30 penalty.

⚠️ If your licence expired more than 5 years ago, you must apply for a fresh DL — renewal is not available.

Documents Needed

  • Current driving licence
  • Form 2 (Renewal Application)
  • Form 1 — Medical self-declaration
  • Form 1A — Required for transport vehicles
  • Applicable renewal fee

  • Renewal applied within 30 days of expiry → effective from expiry date
  • Renewal applied after 30 days → effective from application date + ₹30 penalty
  • Transport vehicle holders must submit medical certificate
  • RTO visit may be required for biometric verification

Duplicate Driving Licence

Lost, damaged, or stolen DL? Apply for a duplicate online.

File an FIR (if lost/stolen)

Visit your nearest police station and file an FIR. Keep a copy.

Visit Parivahan Portal

Go to parivahan.gov.in → Driving Licence Related Services.

Select Duplicate DL

Choose "Apply for Duplicate DL" and enter your DL number and DOB.

Upload Documents

Upload Form 2, FIR copy (if lost), address proof, and photo.

Pay Fee & Book Appointment

Pay online and schedule a verification slot at your RTO.

Visit RTO

Carry original documents. Duplicate DL will be posted to your address.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

Valid for 1 year, allows you to drive in 168+ countries.

Who Can Apply?

Any Indian citizen with a valid permanent Driving Licence and a confirmed foreign travel booking.
