How to Renew Vehicle RC After 15 Years

Last Updated: May 23, 2026

Is your vehicle registration expiring soon? Learn the step-by-step procedure to book an RTO fitness test, submit Form 25, and extend your RC validity. Before booking on the Parivahan Sewa (परिवहन सेवा) portal, make sure to query your current validity using the RC status check tool, or browse other compliance guides in our Vehicle services hub. If your physical Smart Card is lost or damaged, you should first consult our guide to apply for a duplicate RC online.

Delay Penalty Warning

Applying for RC renewal after the expiry date attracts heavy RTO penalties. Under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), the late fee is ₹500/month for cars and ₹300/month for two-wheelers. Make sure to apply at least 60 days in advance!

Required Documents Checklist

Bring these documents in a physical file along with your vehicle for the mandatory inspector audit. Note that a formal RTO Fitness Certificate (FC) is required for all classes of transport and private vehicles during this transition:

  • Form 25: Official renewal application with chassis print.
  • Original RC: Your physical Registration Certificate smart card/paper book.
  • Valid Insurance Policy: Continuous third-party or comprehensive policy.
  • 💨 PUC Certificate: Active Pollution Under Control test certificate.
  • 💸 Green Tax / Road Tax: Receipts proving payment of state-specific taxes.
  • 🆔 Owner Identity & Address Proof: Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Voter ID.

Step-by-Step Online Renewal Process

1. Pay Renewal Fees & Book Fitness Slot

Visit the Vahan portal, log in with your registration number, select 'Renewal of Registration', and pay the required fee and Green Tax. You can check the state-wise rates using our road tax calculator. Book a slot for physical fitness check.

2. Visit the RTO for Physical Inspection

Drive your vehicle to the designated RTO on your appointment day. An inspector will verify the chassis number imprint on Form 25 and check all vehicle safety criteria. Make sure your vehicle is fitted with a government-mandated HSRP number plate before the mechanical inspection.

3. Recieve Renewed Smart Card RC

Once approved, the RTO will extend your registration status in the centralized database. Your new physical Smart Card RC valid for 5 years will be sent to your registered address via speed post.

Physical Verification Needed?

While the Vahan portal supports faceless services, certain steps may still require a physical visit to your local RTO for inspection or document submission.
