What is "Addition of Class of Vehicle"?
Many people get a 2-wheeler licence (MCWG - Motor Cycle With Gear) at age 18. Later, when they buy a car, they need a 4-wheeler licence (LMV - Light Motor Vehicle). Instead of creating a second Driving Licence (which is actually illegal in India), the RTO allows you to "add" the new vehicle class to your existing DL number.
If you apply for a fresh DL instead of adding a class, your application will be blocked by the system.
Step-by-Step Process to Add a Vehicle Class Online
Step 1: Apply for a Learner's Licence (LL) for the New Class
- Visit the Sarathi Parivahan portal and select your state.
- Click on "Apply for Learner Licence".
- Select the option: "Applicant holds Driving Licence" and enter your existing DL number and Date of Birth.
- The system will fetch your details. Select the new vehicle class you want to add (e.g., LMV for cars, MCWG for geared bikes).
- Pay the LL fee (usually ₹150 + ₹50 test fee).
- Note: Since you already hold a DL, many states exempt you from taking the computerized LL test again! Your LL might be generated instantly after payment and Aadhaar authentication.
Step 2: The Mandatory 30-Day Waiting Period
Once your new LL is issued, you must wait a minimum of 30 days before you can apply to add it to your permanent licence.
Step 3: Apply for "Addition of Class of Vehicle"
After 30 days, go back to the Sarathi portal:
- Select "Apply for Driving Licence".
- Enter your new Learner's Licence number and your Date of Birth.
- Fill out the application form for "Addition of Class of Vehicle".
- Upload your existing original DL and the new LL.
- Pay the fees for the driving test and the new Smart Card.
- Book a slot for your driving test at the RTO.
Step 4: The Physical Driving Test at the RTO
You must visit the RTO on your scheduled date with your vehicle. For example, if you are adding LMV, you must bring a car and demonstrate your driving skills on the RTO test track.
Once you pass the test, the RTO inspector will approve your application. A new Smart Card will be printed and mailed to your registered address containing both vehicle classes (e.g., MCWG + LMV).
Estimated Fee Structure (2026)
| Fee Type | Amount |
|---|---|
| Learner's Licence Issue Fee (per class) | ₹150 |
| LL Test Fee (if applicable) | ₹50 |
| Addition to Permanent DL Fee | ₹200 |
| Driving Test Fee | ₹300 |
| New Smart Card Fee | ₹200 |
Important Documents Required
